Are You Visiting Your Optometrist Frequently Enough?
May 12, 2023

Depending on how old you are, you should see an optometrist within a certain range of years. That way, they can catch things early on and make any needed corrective changes. Otherwise, you risk having a condition progress further along than it should. Let's discuss how often you should be visiting an optometrist as an adult.

Ages 20-39: Every Five Years

Your vision will likely not worsen much over the course of this period, so you can go see an optometrist every five years. If you wear glasses or contacts, you should talk with them about how often they would like to see you. It can be different for each individual.

Ages 40-54: Every Two to Four Years

Here's when your eyes might start to change. You might need to wear reading glasses, for example. Again, if you wear glasses or contacts, you might want to see your optometrist more often. According to Popular Science, in the United States, over 40% of the population needs glasses. If you see any changes in vision, like blurry eyesight, make an appointment immediately.

Ages 55-64: Every One to Three Years

Naturally, as you get older, your eyesight tends to weaken more. That can cause you to need to see an optometrist on a more regular basis to check your vision. That way, they can update the prescription for your glasses so that you can see better.

Ages 65 and Older: Every One to Two Years

As you get into your later years, it's critical to see your optometrist on a yearly basis. There can be a lot of changes in a short amount of time, so they need to see you that often to make any corrections to your prescriptions or even point you toward a procedure or medication if it turns out that you have a condition like glaucoma or cataracts. Doing this will help you have the best vision possible.

It may be tempting to skip a visit, but you run the risk of a condition progressing. Many optometrists offer financing, so you can make an appointment if need be and not have to worry about paying a lot. If you do what is best for your eyes, you will enjoy life a lot more.
